I agree with JackLi on the fill-in flash approach. It's one of the important techniques in bird photography once you master it. Use of flash will depends on the circumstances and type of birds in question; flash in total darkness shall be avoided however ...

Whether one uses fill-in flash for bird photography is a personal choice and I respect that. But there are good technical reasons for it in photography and is a fact. With precautions bird disturbance can be kept to minimal as many studies already shown.
